Listener Appreciation Day

Listener Appreciation Day was my first and it was a blast. The only time I had control of the station was during Mandatory Metallica... The rest was the KDKB listeners.

Great calls coming in from all over the valley. This is our day to turn the station over to the loyal KDKB listeners and play YOUR requests.

Along with the requests I did a few giveaways to the Atomic Punks show, if you have never seen this band you need to check them out. Ralph is an awesome front man. You will think your actually watching David Lee Roth.

Just to name a few of the songs that were played for the morning were:

Motorhead - Ace Of Spades (there's always a request for Lemmy)
April Wine - Roller (been ages since I rocked to this one)
Iron Maiden - Powerslave (when was the last time you heard this on the radio?)
Black Sabbath - Lady Evil (Dio solo or with Sabbath still kicks ass)
Aerosmith - Nobodys Fault (Old Aerosmith = Amazing)

I would like to thank everyone who called in this morning.

I believe there is a little rivalry starting to brew between our 3rd shifters at Safeway vs. 3rd shifters at Frys it was pretty damn funny. Everyone having fun and that's what it's all about.

As always feel free to email me with more requests or any comments.

The Gym, Suns, and Kick Ass Rock

Today I am hurting. Back in the gym for the first time in months. Not a pretty site but I made it through. The only thing is well.. keep a towel on until you get back to your locker. I think this should just be a common courtesy to the other guys in the locker room.

Ok now that I got that off my chest.

I have to say congratulations to the Suns. Putting an ass whipping on the Lakers. I will be so glad when the Lakers are sent home after the first round. Keep your eyes on the prize.

Randy Johnson had a tough in his first game, but I think he will turn things around and end up with a great year.

On to another kick ass night of rock at KDKB. After a few days of talking about Listener Appreciation Day calls started rolling in asking if the 3rd shifters were going to be able to call in and get their requests in as well. The answer...Yes. If I am in the studio then we will take care of the 3rd shift crazies that are out working, partying, pr whatever the case maybe. Requests are always welcome since we know rocking to 93.3 KDKB makes the night go faster.

As is the case I started off the evening with Mandatory Metallica. Tonight was "Sad But True", the cover of the Motorhead classic "Damage Case", and "Blackened". These guys are just incredible. The earlier stuff to me is the best but I am not one of these guys who says that "Load" and "Reload" were sell out albums. They were simply moving along with where the industry and the music took the band.

Calls are still coming in requesting the new Ozzy song, which is great. It's good to know that fans are digging this tune. As you should it's loud and has a great guitar riff not to mention it's just catchy. The CD hits the stores on May 22. Other highlights in the morning were "Rainbow in the Dark", "Another Thing Coming" both of these songs now matter how much I hear have to be cranked up. The monitors in the studio will be blown out sooner or later. I don't know if I should be saying that, but I guess I will find out when we need new ones.

You can always make requests for Mandatory Metallica or any song for that matter by emailing me roadie@kdkb.com or call the request line 602-260-9393.

Tomorrow is Listener Appreciation Day. I am excited to know what everyone will request to hear since this is YOUR radio station.

Heaven and Hell / Megadeth / Machine Head

Well the fact I actually made it to this show is amazing. I Felt like crap all weekend. At the last minute I decided to go to the Heaven & Hell show with Megadeth and Machine Head. I am glad I made this concert. I missed out on Machine Head so would love to hear some feedback on how they were (roadie@kdkb.com).

I will start with Megadeth. Ass Kicking Agression. The new CD is going to be awesome, but I must say I don't think I have seen Dave Mustaine shred like that in years. It was simply amazing to watch. His band sounded awesome and put on a great show. I think you could tell that he was happy to be playing with this band and opening for Heaven and Hell.

Heaven and Hell featuring Ronnie James Dio... It has been years since I have seen Dio (Long Beach Arena 2004) and Ronnie can still sing his ass off. The guy still has incredible pipes and is great frontman. You could tell these guys were genuinely happy to be playing these songs and not just doing it for the cash. Vinny Appice hit the drums harder than anyone I have ever seen. He used the drum sticks upside down so he could use the thick end of the stick. They were like f**kin' tree trunks hitting the drums. Simply put these guys fucking rocked the Dodge Theater.

After the show headed into the station and took some calls about the show and everyone seemed to agree that Heaven and Hell was a great concert. Started off the Monday morning with the title track of one of my favorite Metallica albums, "Master of Puppets", then into "And Justice For All", and "The Shortest Straw".
Ended up staying to help the new morning show and hit the 60 a little later than normal which sucked since traffic is awful after 6 a.m.

Lynyrd Skynrd Called

Happy 4-20.

Well what a great way to bring in the weekend. Started off the show Friday well rested after the night of drinking for the Top show. Mandatory Metallica kicks off the weekend with "Blackened" then cranked up Kill Em All's "The Four Horsemen" and wrapped it up with "The Unforgiven II".

I then decided that since it's race weekend, plus it was Friday and that I just plain felt like it I rocked out a 4 play of Ozzy / Black Sabbath which included the new Ozzy tune "I Don't Wanna Stop". Calls rolled in from listeners who were up partying or driving in for the race and thanked me for the four play of the Godfather Oz.

Did a few giveaways for the 4-20 holiday and that's always cool as a reminder as to how many peeps are still up partying or rockin' on the job at 3:30 a.m.

I decided to hang out for the new morning show of J.R. & Marci since their producer Jon would be out of town next week and I would need to help while he was out. Plus it was cool to hang with them and the slew of guests that were roaming the halls. One was our very own Night Guy, the legend, Alice Cooper. I have never really said it, but I need to let everyone know that Alice is a cool dude! Always cool to hear his stories about touring and just his life. Alice hung out took photos with all of us. As Alice was taking pics he looked at me and said what I believe to be the funniest line spoken to me, "Lynyrd Skynyrd called and they would like their hair back." and "Great hair." I must say as funny as it was it was even more amusing to hear someone of his greatness say that.

A little later in the show the baddest and I guess I should add the craziest football player and Super Bowl Champ Bill Romanowski stopped by. He might be a little nuts from the 20 concussions but he was still very easy going and talked about everything. We all made jokes about whether he would spit on us or not. Good fun for a Friday.

It was an awesome Friday. I didn't even care that I hadn't slept since 2 p.m. the day before.

Next up Heaven Hell with Megadeth who will kick off their tour on Sunday at Dodge Theater.

ZZ Top Show

The pre party at the Hard Rock for the ZZ Top show was very cool. The entire air staff came out and partied with the loyal KDKB listeners. Our new morning show of J.R. and Marci also stopped by and got a great welcome. The Arizona Renegade Rollergirls were also out partying with us. Man do these girls look like some tough women. I would hate to get knocked on my ass by one of these girls.

The great thing about the pre party is meeting and hanging with listeners and friends. Also drinking a few cold ones is good, but it becomes bad when you have to go in at midnight. So a few at the Hard Rock Cafe and then a couple more at the show means it's going to be a long night in the studio.

The guys in ZZ Top still put on a good show. It was awesome to see them play "Just Got Paid" which happens to be one of the greatest riffs in rock EVER! Of course they played "La Grange", "Legs", "Jesus Just Left Chicago" and "Got Me Under Pressure"

Finally made it in to the studio around 11:30 and rocked out with Metallica, the new Ozzy track, and took quite a few calls about the Top show.

The 3rd Shift

One day closer to the weekend. The Metallica set was a little newer last night hitting "Holier Than Thou" and "Don't Tread On Me" and closing it out with "No Leaf Clover". You can say what you want to say about Metallica's black CD but that disc kicks some ass. "Holier Than Thou" rocks with the best of the old Metallica and you can't convince me otherwise. Even songs like "Struggle Within" and "of Wolf and Man" are just in your face.

Also this morning did a double shot of Ozzy with one of the two being his new song "I Don't Wanna Stop". This song is just impossible to listen to at a low volume no matter how hard you try it has to go to eleven. Listeners seem to really be digging the song as well. "Black Rain" will be in stores May 22.

A great thing about working the 3rd shift is the fact that I now know every strip club in town as they all advertise with us and all night I hear how they have the hottest "entertainers". Well I will tell you this I will be the judge of that and will be more than happy to report back to you who it is.

The highlight of the night is when Talben calls in to talk about something. I say something because I still haven't figured out what he is talking about in 9 out of 10 calls. It's classic and every morning I have to share the call with someone because they are just to funny not to let some people around the building hear. This morning I would swear he fell asleep for a brief minute while trying to talk to me.

Tonight is ZZ Top with a pre party at the Hard Rock. $3 Bud Lights so needless to say Thursdays show will probably be a rough one, but at least I will have a nice buzz for a while. To get ready for the show I thought I would do something different and play a new track from Tesla's new CD "Reel to Real" and their cover of ZZ Top's "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers". Awesome.

Oh one last thing cranked up Iron Maiden's "Run To the Hills". Nuff said.

The Good Ol Days

I have had a few emails come in and ask if I ended up living in a crappy motel like the Milner Inn when I landed in Phoenix. I am proud to say no. There are times when I miss the days at the Milner Entertainment Complex. Where else can you have a Dunkin Donuts, liquor store, and a strip club all within walking distance? Damn I miss the Foxy Lady. Ok I mean I miss the free beer, and hell Darryl the owner gave me a pacer to drive for a few months. Make fun of that if you want but it's certainly better than walking with my 12 pack to the studio evernight or hitching a ride with one of the dancers.

I actually landed in a decent apartment. Great location, I mean hell it's 10 minutes from the Tilted Kilt (see Saturday's blog) so I can't complain. Even though as it was put to me over the weekend, "everything is backwards in this place". The Shui is not fung. You get my drift. Only a few months on the lease and since I have only hung up a few pictures it will do.

It was awesome to play the new Heaven and Hell track this morning called "The Devil Cried". Pick it up on the new CD which features 3 new tracks. The show is here on Sunday with Megadeth and Machine Head. Don't miss it. From what I have heard of the new Megadeth it's going to kick some ass. Go Dave!

The funniest part about the shift was the E.A.S.(Emergency Alert System) Test went off which starts a flashing blue light in the studio. It happened to be during "Another One Bites the Dust", so it looked like there was a strobe light in the studio. Brought back the days of disco or roller skating or something. This may not be as funny as it was to me but hey it was 4 a.m.

Back to the Grind

Monday again - Mandatory Metallica featured "Blackened", "Sad But True", and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". A good selection for the Monday morning I must say.

Other song highlights for me during the show included one of my favorites from Zep "Bron-Yr-Aur-Stomp", Megadeth's "Symphony Of Destruction", I can't wait to see this show on Sunday with them (Megadeth) and Heaven and Hell featuring Ronnie James Dio. Also threw in Ozzy's "Over the Mountain" and hailed the "Sweet Leaf" about 3:45 a.m.

After months of searching and finding the right combo....today is finally the day of the new KDKB Morning Show of J.R. and Marci. Everyone here is very excited to have them in the building and on the air. Check more out about them
here.

George Thorogood and the weekend

Well first things first. After a few weeks here in Phoenix, I think I have found a place to call my local "hangout", it happens to be the Tilted Kilt on Warner. While the food was ok it really didn't matter because the girls working there were all hot. They were all wearing their plaid skirts or kilts with little white tops. WOW! What else can I ask for in my local hangout? Nothing. So I am sure I will see you there at some point.

Saturday took me to the Salty Senorita in Scottsdale where I had a damn good burrito and the cute bartender certainly didn't hurt the experience there today. Regardless of who was waiting on me the food was good and the weather was kick ass. A great day to hang outside and have cold one before the George Thorogood concert at the Celebrity Theater.

As I mentioned in a previous post George always puts on a great show. It was cool seeing an old roadie friend in his tour manager. I hadn't had a chance to catch up with him since I saw the band last year in Raleigh, NC at the Carolina Theater of Durham. He was surprised to see me since the last he knew I was out of work and I still wasn't working. We caught up and took a few pics with George before he took the stage. Again George was making jokes about me being in the Allman Brothers Band. The Destroyers started the show with "Rock N Roll Party" and of course played the staples of the show, "One Bourbon", " I Drink Alone", "Haircut" and the highlight to me was "Gear Jammer" from the Maverick album. Again I will tell you that if you have to chance to see GT do so. You won't be disappointed.

Friday

Mandatory Metallica tonight "Bleeding Me", "The Prince", and "Creeping Death". As always you can send me a request at roadie@kdkb.com. A great set to bring in the weekend. I'm telling you the only time I turn down the monitors anymore is when I answer the phones. It's loud and kickin ass for me at 93.3.

This weekend should be a great one. So many shows come here, I love it. After seeing so many shows from the side of the stage it's great to go and people watch and enjoy the show from the audience. George Thorogood is Saturday night and as always I will be there. I haven't missed a Destroyers show in years. If he is close to where I am, I go to see GT. I finally got to meet him last year and George is a cool dude. Also it was pretty funny when he called me Duane Allman. Hey I will take being called a legend, whether it's Gregg Allman or Duane they both are awesome.
I will fill you in on the show later. Since Friday is upon us.. I am off to go drink some beers!

Have a great weekend!

Weird Feelings

There is nothing like the 3rd shift in Phoenix. Mandatory Metallica everynight at Midnight. Tonight it was "The Wait", "Killing Time", and "Through the Never".

I have never been freaked out but there is something eerie about cranking Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath" at 3:30 a.m. that makes you think your about to be killed and your head chopped off like a bad horror movie. I swear that was the weirdest feeling I have ever had and it was one of those deals where you just kept looking over your shoulder to make sure no one was back there to kill you.

I shared the story with the new morning show producer Jon Watson, who still does the occasional overnight, and he laughed but knew exactly what I was talking about. He says he has seen and heard some weird stuff late night. We did get a good laugh this morning sharing some of those stories. Who knows what tonight will bring...Never a dull moment here that's for sure.

From Raleigh to Phoenix

What a long strange trip it's been. After being in Raleigh for 2 years to the day and having worked at 106.1 WRDU for almost that entire time. The heritage rocker went country and I was out on my ass for almost 4 months.

I left Raleigh, NC on Feb 27 and headed West. I can't tell you how many times I have made the trip across the Country, but one thing is for sure it hasn't changed. Of course it's always more fun making the trip with friends and co-workers than it is by yourself. The great thing is after being on the road for so long I never have to pay for a hotel, someone always lets me crash on their couch or spare bedroom. I will spare you the details of the drive other than I talked on my cell phone most of the drive since that drive can be very boring at times.

Let's just skip ahead to March 10. I got a phone call from Buzz Casey to let me know I had finally landed a great gig in Phoenix, AZ at
93.3 KDKB. I think this could be the right job after all these years. Buzz tells me I will be producing the Alice Cooper show, on air overnights, and off air production. All I can think is "Kick Ass!" I have a F**king job, finally. Plus to be working in Phoenix is unreal.

Again I will skip the details of the drive from L.A. to Phoenix.

I had my first night on the air on March 19 and you would think it would have been pretty easy since I had been out of work for almost 4 months. Well that was not really the case. In the case of my former co-worker
Bob the Blade who went to a station that wasn't to far from RDU. How easy is it to go from saying "106-1 RDU to 106-5 SFL?" Here it is 93-3 KDKB Everything That Rocks, plus I had to learn all new equipment which is never fun. I did think that kicking off the show with Mandatory Metallica would have made me feel right at home it certainly was not the case, but I managed.

The first break was a tough one as I immediately fell into old habits.

I did manage to recover pretty quick going thru the evening. As jocks are always told just dont f**k up the call letters. I made sure of that.

Since the first night and playing some kick ass Rock from Metallica, Dio, Robin Trower, Zep, Van Halen, Megadeth and Ozzy plus the Classics we love to turn up to 11 this is the gig and Radio is actually FUN!!!
